central ranges of new south walesThe central ranges of New South Wales lies about 300kms inland in an area west, North West of Sydney. Mudgee is one of the oldest of this viticultural region. Newer areas are Cowra and Orange. German settlers planted the first vines in Mudgee in 1858, however it wasn’t long before more vines were planted and suddenly there were around 50 vineyards supporting the wine industry.

The gold rush of 1872 bought more people to the region but when the depression of 1893 hit the viticulture industry was virtually destroyed in the region. A few families persisted and hence the Roth families Craigmoor winery was one of the few to survive. Little progress was made of the wine industry in the region until the late 1960’s when Huntington Estate was established.

Huntington Estate, Mudgee: Established in 1969 by Bob And Wendy Roberts. It covers an area of 106 acres (43 hectares). The winery is well known for their red wines which age extremely well. The Estate holds a musical festival every year where patrons are able to not only enjoy the music but have the opportunity to enjoy fine food with the quality Huntington wines.

Lowe Family Wine Co. Mudgee: This winery was established in 1987 and is an organic facility. They have a wide range of wines available at the cellar door as well as on line. They offer membership to a wine club and shipping is free to orders over $300. One of the four flagships varieties is the Zinfandel.

In Cowra vines were first planted in 1973 with Chardonnay being the predominate grape. Outside producers such as Brokenwood and Huntington in the Hunter Valley and Richmond Grove from the Barossa all use fruit grown in the Cowra region.

Cowra Estate. Cowra:  Established in 1973 and is now owned by John Gerber, who also is the owner of Barossa’s Chateau Tanunda. The premium wines are the Classic Bat Range and Rosè is a very successful wine on the export market.

Bloodwood. Orange: Established in 1983 by Stephen and Rhonda Doyle, this vineyard covers an area of 21 acres (8.5 hectares0 which is one of the smaller vineyards in the region. They produce an excellent Pinot Noir, a sparkling Chirac and Big Men in Tights. Shipping is free in Australia upon the purchase of 12 bottles.

Big Rivers:  Many of the original Big River growers were returned servicemen from the First World War or Italian immigrants who moved to the area after both world wars. Big Rivers is a hot dry region in southwest New South Wales centred Riverina area.

 De Bortoli:  Established in 1928, this winery covers an area of 527acres (213hectares). It is a third generation winery and has produced many brands of wine. One of the most popular is Noble One and Black Noble. They offer membership to their Melba Wine Club, which gives you exclusive member-only to both the cellar door and online. Membership is free. De Bortoli have 3 cellar doors,  Bilbul, Hunter Valley and Yarra Valley. All are open seven days a week.

 Charles Sturt University Wines:  In 1893 the University planted vines at Wagga Wagga as part of an experimental farm established following the formation of the New South Wales department of Agriculture in 1890. A professional management team has been running the winery since  It has a fully operational winery and the cellar door on the campus stocks a wide range of wines. They have a Charles Sturt range of Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Moscato.

Cranswick Estate:  Covering an area of 670 acres (270 hectares) this winery was established in 1976. Cranswick Estate was floated on the Stock Exchange in 1997 and have produces a series of good value releases, such as the Semillon. The Botrytis Semillon, Autumn Gold is one of the region’s best.
